In 2015, a top Super Smash Bros Melee player was ready to give up his character to preserve his legacy.

Instead he did something weirder: He got a coach.

Juan Debiedma invited his elementary school friend to coach him at tournaments, a decision which had huge impacts on his success and how people have started talking about Smash Bros Melee as a video game.

Special thanks to Even Matchup Gaming's Joe Cribari for his time chatting about the fighting game community. The most special thanks in the world to Jennifer Huggins who told me about boxing. Thanks to Team Liquid and Alliance for setting up these interviews.
